Do You Need to Run UP or DOWN When A Fire Breaks Out in A High Office Building?

There must be many people who work in high office buildings, so if you work on the 27th floor of a 33-story building and a fire breaks out in this building, then you…

What to Do?

You need to quickly find the fire exit and run downstairs first. Elevators are not available at this time! If smoke is already spreading, lower your body and move quickly. Do not move upstairs as most of the rooftop terraces are locked, so don’t expect to be rescued there.

What Should You Do When You Go Down to The 10th Floor and Find That The Fire Started on The 9th Floor?

First of all, don’t imagine that you can break through the fire point, because the temperature at the center of the fire field is generally above 1000 ℃. Also don’t stay on adjacent floors, the temperature is also around several hundred degrees (PS: If you don’t have a wet towel, you can last up to 3 minutes in the billowing smoke. If you have the towel, you can last up to 15 minutes). You should quickly turn around and go up to the 12th or 13th floor to find a suitable room.

What Kind of Room Is Suitable?

First of all, it is not the toilet, because most of the people in the fires were not burned to death, but suffocated to death. Most of the toilets in the building have no windows in the middle of each floor. So, you have to find a room closest to the main road. It will make you the first target of firefighters. This room must have windows and no security nets because the firefighters are extremely busy in a fire, and in order to effectively rescue the most people in a short period of time, those in the rooms with anti-theft windows are always the last to be rescued.

After entering such a room, the first thing is to close the door, the second is to seal all the air-conditioning outlets by most- commonly-used tape, and the third is to smash the windows of the room. Of course, if there are many people, these things can be done at the same time.

If you are worried that the windows of the building are made of tempered glass, then tell the strong male colleagues not to hit the middle of the glass. The four corners of the tempered glass are the weakest places of the glass, and it can be easily broken with sharp utensils.

In addition, no matter you are at home or in the office, as long as you are above the third floor, don’t just choose to jump off the building to escape. Countless people who died because of this have already proved that everyone is not Spiderman or superman.

What To Do in The Room?

  • First of all, don’t shout for help. Because you will consume more oxygen and inhale too much carbon monoxide and nitrogen by this way, and you will be more likely to suffocate;
  • Second, if it is in the daytime, you should look for brightly colored clothes or cloth strips, and shake them from the window to attract attention; if it is at night, you should use a flashlight to attract attention. In the fire scene, if you don’t have a flashlight, a lighter is definitely not a good choice. Because it is not obvious in the fire scene, and it will cause an explosion of flammable gases;
  • Third, wet towels are welcome in any fire scene. Covering your eyes and nose with a wet towel will make you last longer and give firefighters more time to rescue you;

  • Forth, learn to use fire extinguishers, ” lift→pull→aim→spray”. Pay attention to distinguish between dry powder and dry ice fire extinguishers. When your colleagues or family members are on fire, only use dry powder fire extinguishers to spray their bodies. If a dry ice fire extinguisher is used, the dry ice sprayed at minus 70 degrees will cause the muscles of their burning bodies to explode.

Fire Extinguishers

How to Use A Fire Extinguisher?

  • Lift–Hold the handle to lift the fire extinguisher;
  • Pull–Unplug the insurance;
  • Aim–Aim at the fire point at the side and rear of the fire point that is more than 1.5 meters away. If it is an electrical fire, it should be farther away;
  • Spray–Press and hold the injection switch, aim at the fire point to spray, and move horizontally to surround and cover the fire point with dry powder. On the safe side, the continuous injection time could be as long as possible. After the fire extinguisher is used once, the pressure will disappear within 30 minutes, and it needs to be re-pressurized and filled with powder next time.

If there is a fire in the office of a high building and there is a chance for you to go downstairs, you should evacuate downstairs as quickly as possible. If trapped in a fire, the most important thing is to keep calm, inform rescuers promptly, and take measures to prevent fire and smoke from entering. Believe that rescuers will rescue you as soon as possible.
