How to Avoid Danger When Driving? “Five Essentials” Should Keep in Mind

Defensive driving originated in the United States in the 1950s, and was earlier popular in Britain, the United States and other countries. It is now widely used by countries all over the world with remarkable results.

Here are “Five Essentials” to help avoid danger when driving:

1. Estimate Risks
Think ahead and anticipate potential hazards. Scan the road and traffic for clues that might indicate an upcoming risk, like a vehicle stopped at an odd place or a congested intersection.
2. Keep Your Eyes on The Distance
Look as far down the road as possible, at least 10-15 seconds ahead of your vehicle. This will give you more time to spot and prepare for risks that arise.
3. Scan Constantly
Check your mirrors continuously, every 3-5 seconds. Scan all around your vehicle, not just what’s right in front of you. Be aware of what’s happening on shoulders and streets merging into yours.
4. Leave Room for Error
Keep a safe following distance from vehicles in front of you, at least a 3-second gap. This gives you time to react if the vehicle ahead suddenly brakes. Similarly, leave space between you and vehicles around you.
5. Be Conspicuous
Make sure other drivers can see you clearly. Drive in a predictable manner following traffic laws. Use turn signals and brake lights properly. Use headlights during the daytime for increased visibility.
Applying these 5 tips will help improve your risk assessment and reaction times, giving you more opportunities to avoid dangerous situations on the road. Other general strategies to reduce danger like driving the speed limit, avoiding distractions, and following defensively will complement these essentials. Staying focused, alert and aware behind the wheel is key to driving safely.
