Inspection Method of Cold-Resistant Gloves

Cold-resistant gloves are used to avoid damage to the hands of workers in low-temperature environments, such as light industry, oil, natural gas, coal mines, non-coal mines, commerce and other low-temperature environment operations or outdoor operations in winter. They are suitable for use in climates or operating environments with temperatures as low as -50℃.

Basic Requirements

Cold-resistant gloves should comply with the basic requirements of GB/T 12624-2009 “Protective Gloves—General Requirements & Test Methods”.

Mechanical Properties

It is based on the content of the European standard EN 511:2006 “Protective gloves against cold”, and selects the friction resistance and tear resistance properties in EN 388. The specific rating and testing methods refer to the national standard GB 24541-2009 “Protective Gloves for Hand Protection against Mechanical Hazards” corresponding to EN 388.

Resistance to Flexural Damage

Test and evaluate the glove’s resistance to repeated flexural damage at 20°C ±2°C or the temperature specified by the glove manufacturer. There should be no cracks. This requirement applies only to coated materials. The test method refers to the national standard GB/T 12586 “Rubber or Plastic Coated Fabrics – Determination of Flexural Destruction Resistance” (IDT ISO 7854:1995) corresponding to EN ISO 7854:1997.

Water Resistance

Considering that cold-resistant gloves will lose their cold-proof performance when they get wet, the test was conducted according to the ISO 15383 method in accordance with the requirements of EN 511. If the gloves have water penetration, they will be graded as level 0, and if they are impermeable, they will be graded as level 1. If the gloves are rated as level 0, it needs to be stated on the packaging that the gloves may lose their cold-proof properties under specific circumstances. The specific test method refers to the standard GA 7-2004 “Firefighting Gloves” (NEQ ISO 15383: 2001) corresponding to ISO 15383.

Low Temperature Bending Properties

It is based on the requirements of EN 511 and requires testing of gloves designed to be used below -30°C. The low-temperature resistance of glove materials is judged by whether cracks appear when bent at-50°C. This test method refers to the national standard GB/T 18426-2001 “Low Temperature Bending Test of Rubber or Plastic Coated Fabrics” [IDT ISO 4675: 1990 (1996)] corresponding to ISO 4675.

Convective Cold

Convective cold is one of the important indicators for judging the cold-proof performance of cold-resistant gloves. According to the test method of EN 511, it is divided into levels 1 to 4 according to the size of the convective thermal resistance. When the convection cold level reaches level 2 to level 4, the friction resistance and tear resistance of the gloves should at least meet the requirements of level 2. Otherwise, the convection cold level should be judged as level 1.

Contact Cold

Contact cold is another important indicator for evaluating the cold-proof performance of cold-resistant gloves. According to the provisions of EN 511, the double-plate test method specified in ISO 5085-1 is used. According to the contact thermal resistance, it is divided into levels 1 to 4. When the cold contact level reaches level 2 to level 4, the friction resistance and tear resistance of the gloves should at least meet the requirements of level 2. Otherwise, the cold contact level should be judged as level 1.

Through various inspection methods, we can check whether the material, structure, cold protection and heat insulation capabilities of the gloves meet the standards, and evaluate the product quality level. Standardized inspection methods of gloves have important guiding significance for ensuring the quality of gloves and the healthy development of the industry.
